Allison Loudermilk
Hey, guys, and welcome to the podcast. This is Allison Loudermilk, the science editor at howstuffworks.com.
Robert Lamb: And this is Robert Lamb, science writer at howstuffworks.com. And in this episode, we’ve got monsters. More specifically, we have bouts, battles, fights, quarrels -
Allison Loudermilk
Skirmishes.
Robert Lamb
Skirmishes between monsters and science. And I mean actual science.
Allison Loudermilk
As opposed to the fake kind.
Robert Lamb
We’re not talking about science fiction, here. As awesome as science fiction is, we’re talking about actual published scientific studies that deal with various fictional monsters. So we’re going to include such bouts as the Sasquatch vs. the werewolf, physicist vs. ghost and vampires.
Allison Loudermilk
Wow. That’s one I’m going to have to tune into too.
Robert Lamb
That one’s kind of like a tag team match because I think it’s technically physicist and mathematicians against ghosts and vampires. And then the final bout is going to be Robert Smith versus Zombies.
Allison Loudermilk
We’re not talking about The Cure’s Robert Smith, either.
Robert Lamb
Yeah. Different Robert Smith.
Allison Loudermilk
Although, now I’m going to have a Cure’s song playing in my head the whole podcast.
Robert Lamb
Well, that’s a good problem to have.
Allison Loudermilk
That’s not a bad thing.
Robert Lamb
All right. So let’s kick it off.
Allison Loudermilk
First battle, Sasquatch vs. werewolves.
Robert Lamb
Tell me a little about the Sasquatch. You’re familiar with the Bigfoot.
Allison Loudermilk
Yeah, there was a reporting of a Sasquatch sighting in the North Georgia Mountains a while back.
Robert Lamb
Yeah, those guys that -
Allison Loudermilk
Those hokey guys. The pictures were pretty hilarious.
Robert Lamb
Yeah, most pictures of Bigfoot are pretty hilarious because they’re pretty fake or they’re just abysmal quality.
Allison Loudermilk
And he goes by many names, ol’ Bigfoot.
Robert Lamb
Yeah, again – Sasquatch, Bigfoot, Yeti, and one of my favorites – the Skunk Ape if you live in Florida.
Allison Loudermilk
Yeah, and I noticed you wrote a couple of other ones down here that I’ve not heard of, and perhaps the listeners haven’t heard of.
Robert Lamb
Yeah? Well, you’ve heard of the Wendigo, right?
Robert Lamb
The Wendigo is often tied into cannibalism myths. I think it comes out of various Native American traditions. But it’s also an X-Men character. I think it was in Stephen King Book. But anyway, then there’s also the Yahoa, the Oma, the Rugaro, and the Boqs. So depending on who’s describing this guy, he runs anywhere between 7-15 feet tall. He’s extremely hairy, surprisingly hard to capture on film. And despite having been reported for centuries, we haven’t managed to catch one and put one in a zoo or anything.
